Osteopathy
is a system of healing, which treats areas of impaired mobility
of the musculo-skeletal system. According to classical Osteopathic
theory, the restoration of mobility affects the balance of the musculo-skeletal
and neurological systems, which in turn can have far-reaching effects
on both the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
In
September 1986, a study was run, using Fox's low-force osteopathic
and cranial techniques on a group of 24 volunteers with pre-menopausal
symptoms. Its purpose was to test the hypothesis that, through the
reduction of areas of physical stress , the loading on the neurological
system (and the hormonal system) could be reduced.
Most
systems began to respond after the first treatment, and as the number
of treatments increased, so the symptoms eased. All of the symptoms
in each of the volunteers were effected and either eliminated or
reduced to grade 2 (on a scale of 1-10, 1 being nothing and 10 being
bearable) for periods ranging from 5-12 months. The symptoms removed/reduced
were: hot flushes, night sweats, depression, insomnia, muscle aches,
backache, tearfulness, fatigue and urinary frequency.
In
every case there was a significant difference (<0.05) between
the first and second treatments.
The
table below shows the number of women who had the symptoms at the
beginning of the study and the mean number of treatments required
to either remove the symptom or reduce it to grade 2.
As
the number of treatments increased so the symptoms were less apparent.
